Nov 15, 2024 – Just move, buddy up, and the obesity gene
Happy Friday! Each week, I’m sharing two nano health habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote to ponder on your health journey.
No one’s yet discovered the elixir of youth. There is no one fix for a longer, healthier life. What we do have, though, are nano or micro habits that together make all the difference.
Episode 3 of my podcast The Health Refresh is out. It’s about the power of health data and how just one piece of data led me to lose 20 pounds, or nearly 10 kilograms. That’s a lot! You can find it wherever you listen to your podcasts.
Two Nano Health Habits
Just move: If exercise was a pill, it would be the greatest health invention ever made. It improves our health on multiple levels, including mental and physical health, weight control, and mood. It’s as if our bodies were built to move. If you don’t like one movement, find another.
Buddy up: Having someone share your journey makes it more likely that we’ll keep at it. Is there someone who also wants to move more, who could join you in, say, a weekly challenge to do 150 minutes of moderate exercise. That’s the recommended amount.
If 150 minutes seems too much, how about starting with 75 minutes? That could be a few walks a week.
One Lesson
Some of us are genetically built to feel hungry right after a meal. Humans have about 20,000 genes and one of them has been nicknamed the obesity gene. The gene is called FTO and, if you inherit changes at this gene, it can result in your body producing more of the hunger hormone ghrelin.
It explains why one in six of us, who have this inherited change, can feel hungry right after a meal.
