Nov 22, 2024 – Don’t know, don’t eat; step it out; and blood pressure testing at home

Happy Friday! Each week, I’m sharing two nano health habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote to ponder on your health journey. No one’s yet discovered the elixir of youth. There is no one fix for a longer, healthier life. What we do have, though, are nano or micro habits that together make all the difference. Episode 4 of my podcast The Health Refresh is out now. It’s about our protein intake and how much is enough as we get older. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts.

Two Nano Health Habits

Don’t know, don’t eat: If you don’t recognize an ingredient on a label of packaged food, don’t eat it. Some food additives are banned in Europe but allowed in the US. They have names like brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propyl paraben and Red Dye no 3. If these ingredients are on the label, don’t eat whatever’s inside! Step it out: Recent research has shown that about 7,000 steps a day (7,126 steps to be exact) will cut your risk of heart disease by HALF. That’s a huge difference. Even 2,500 to 2,700 steps a day –– about a one-mile walk –– will bring health benefits.

One Lesson

Measure your blood pressure at home. There’s no need to wait for your annual medical check up to measure your blood pressure. You can measure it easily at home, using affordable equipment that’s as reliable as what your doc uses. Validatebp.org, run by the American Medical Association, has a list of devices you can trust.
