June 13, 2025: Measuring omega 3s & increasing neuroplasticity

Brain health ideas design

Welcome to this week’s edition of Boost Brain Health, sharing two healthy habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote.

Two Brain Health Habits

Measure your omega 3s. Our brains need omega 3 fats, like EPA and DHA, to build and repair. We can measure our omega 3 levels through a blood draw.

It’s worth measuring as most of us eat way more omega 6s than omega 3s. Omega 6s have been linked to inflammation. If you’re in the US, Quest has an Omega 3 & 6 Ratio Panel Test you can order yourself.

Learn a new skill. A language, a musical instrument, a puzzle. It doesn’t matter what the challenge is, as long as we use our brain in new ways.

Brain scans show that learning increases neuroplasticity, which is our brain’s ability to form new connections. So, the more we use our brains, the stronger they become.

One Lesson

Cognitive decline as we age is NOT inevitable. The current medical paradigm is that getting muddled and confused is just a normal part of aging.

But new research is showing that a steady mental decline is not the only path.

If you want to dig into the science, Dr Dale Bredesen has a new book called The Ageless Brain. I highly recommend it.

One Quote

“The mind is like an iceberg. It floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.”

Attributed to Sigmund Freud
