June 27, 2025: Water-rich foods & microplastics in bottle caps

Bottle caps

Welcome to this week’s edition of Boost Brain Health, sharing two healthy habits and one lesson.

Two Brain Health Habits

Eat water-rich foods. We can top up our liquid intake by eating fruit and vegetables that are rich in water content. Cucumbers, watermelon and strawberries, for example. All three are over ninety per cent water.

Pass on the trans fat. If you see trans fat on a food label, put it back on the shelf! Trans fats are man made to stabilize food and make it last longer. They also increase our risk of cognitive decline.

One Lesson

A new study from France has shown that water from glass bottles contained three times more microplastics than water from plastic bottles. The microplastic came from the bottle cap.

Those microplastics can also enter the human brain. A separate study measured about a spoon full of microplastics and nanoplastics in the average brain sample.

Where we get our water from is key, particularly at home. Reverse osmosis filtration systems have been shown to remove 99.9% of microplastics.

You can read the French results here.
