Dec 13, 2024 – Keeping track, and finding joy with pets and people we love
Happy Friday! Each week, I’m sharing two nano health habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote to ponder on your health journey.
No one’s yet discovered the elixir of youth. There is no one fix for a longer, healthier life. What we do have, though, are nano or micro habits that together make all the difference.
Episode 7 of my podcast The Health Refresh is out now. It’s about the genetics of fat and how a particular set of genes called the fat controllers can make weight loss difficult. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts.
Two Nano Health Habits
Keep track: If you love data like I do, it can be encouraging to track how many steps we’re walking, or miles we’re doing on a bike.
There are plenty of apps that can help: like Health, which is preloaded on iPhones; Google Fit on Android; and Strava for distance.
Find moments of joy in every day: What fills your heart with joy? Remember to find moments of joy with the people and pets you love.
According to the American Heart Association, spending time with an animal can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.
One Lesson
Avocados boost gut health: A new study of over 1,000 people showed that eating an avocado a day for 26 weeks delivered improvements in the variety of their gut microbiome.
Avocados are nutrient dense, high in monounsaturated fat (a good kind of fat), dietary fibers (which make us feel fuller for longer and feed our microbiome), and vitamins. If a whole avocado is a bit much, you could start with a half a day.
You can read the results here.
