Dec 6, 2024 – Habit prompts, black mold, and the genetics of movement

Happy Friday! Each week, I’m sharing two nano health habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote to ponder on your health journey.

No one’s yet discovered the elixir of youth. There is no one fix for a longer, healthier life. What we do have, though, are nano or micro habits that together make all the difference.

Episode 6 of my podcast The Health Refresh is out now. It’s about how the genetics of your metabolism affects your health. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts.

Two Nano Health Habits

Prompt a new habit: What new habit could you start with visual prompts so it might stick easily?

For example, could you put your walking shoes by the bed, so you don’t even think before putting them on in the morning? It’s an automatic prompt.

Remove black mold in damp areas: Remove any black mold in your home, even if you don’t feel any symptoms. Black mold grows in warm, dark areas, like showers and baths.

Diluted bleach or vinegar in a spray bottle will do the trick. Wait a few minutes and scrub off with a stiff brush.

One Lesson

Genetics influences our muscle types. Our genes play a role in what kind of movement suits us better than other exercise.

For example, one gene is called ACTN3, which codes for a protein needed in fast-twitch muscle fibers for rapid muscle contractions. If you’re a sprinter, ACTN3 will help you get going quickly.

About 20% of us don’t make ACTN3 at all, including me, which is just one reason why I’m not a sprinter!
