Feb 7, 2025 – Fork awareness; and the power of blueberries

Bunch of blueberries

Happy Friday! Each week, I’m sharing two nano health habits, a lesson, and an inspirational quote to ponder on your health journey.

No one’s yet discovered the elixir of youth. There is no one fix for a longer, healthier life. What we do have, though, are nano or micro habits that together make all the difference.

Two Nano Health Habits

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. I love this summary of how to eat, by author Michael Pollan.

His 2011 book Food Rules offers common sense ideas we can all recognize: “It’s not food it it arrived through the window of your car.”

Fork awareness: I’m not a great fan of calorie counting, as the vast majority of short-term diets don’t work. But it can be helpful to be aware of what’s on the end of our fork. Sometimes we eat for emotional reasons. Sometimes we’re not aware of what we’re eating.

Apps like Cronometer and My FitnessPal can give you an idea of overall trends. They have barcodes too, so you can scan packaging. You don’t need to track for long. Just a few weeks of tracking will show you what you tend to eat.

One Lesson

Blueberries boost brain health. If you need your brain to be firing on all cylinders, consider the humble blueberry. It boosts cognitive performance within hours of eating.

One Quote

“Your longevity is more malleable than you think.”
