July 18, 2025: Handy supplement quality check & the power of saunas

Welcome to this week’s edition of Boost Brain Health, sharing two healthy habits and one lesson.
Two Brain Health Habits
Measure your vitamin D levels. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to over 200 conditions, including poor brain health.
Studies have shown that we have a 25-fold higher risk of mild cognitive impairment, and being on the path to Alzheimer’s, if we are low in vitamin D.
And shockingly, about one in three of us are low on vitamin D.
Check the quality of your supplements. Supplements are unregulated, so it’s important to check they contain what they say they contain.
A new app, SuppCo, makes that a whole lot easier by enabling us to scan our supplement label and then see a rating for what’s inside. Really helpful.
One Lesson
Hard to believe but 20 years of data showed that middle-aged men who took a sauna four to seven times a week for between 15 and 20 minutes a time, reduced their chances of dying for cardiovascular disease by 50%.
You can read the results in JAMA Internal Medicine.
